Alvin Ailey

Alvin Ailey

As only to be expected, Alvin Ailey can only be described as exquisite, magnificent and every other positive adjective that comes to mind.

I’ve been watching Alvin Ailey since the 90s, so naturally I’ve seen several company changes over the years. What you are guaranteed is a company whose aesthetics and technique are equally beautiful, with an extremely high bar of precision.

The programme is captivating, and the time flew by. The score/soundtrack is eclectic, which seamlessly took us through generations, from traditional old spirituals to Duke Wellingtons Cotton Club of the roaring 20s. Then came the very emotional Donny Hathaway ‘s’ 70s classic ‘Song for you’, followed by Disco, a sprinkling of exemplary vocalist Jennifer Holliday, to present-day house music. The programme takes you through the journey of life, which leaves you both emotionally and physically exhausted, as if you had been throwing yourself around that stage for two and a half hours.

Their masterful blend of new works, whilst keeping the traditional pieces, like “Revelation”, is absolute perfection. It is wonderful to see that the institution of Alvin Ailey is still being revered, celebrated and adored as it should be.
